Using Coconut Milk For Beauty
Plus 9 Great Tips to Get You Started!

Recently my niece started using coconut milk on her hair as a leave in hair conditioner because she had noticed how long and thick my hair has gotten since I started using it.

But, there was one important thing she didn’t realize . . .

Coconut milk needs to be refrigerated!

Needless to say, it didn’t take very long for her to find that out.

So, after we shared a few laughs together, I realized I better write a list of tips that will help you too.

Check out the 9 simple tips below that will help make it easy for you to start using coconut milk as an all natural, organic beauty product.

9 Tips - Using Coconut Milk for Beauty

Canned coconut milk is perfect to use if you’re looking for all natural, organic beauty products!

Always remember . . .

1. Coconut milk needs to be refrigerated!

2. Where can you buy coconut milk?

You can usually find canned organic coconut milk at your local grocery store, ethnic store, or natural food store.

I have purchased some online but I was not happy with it.

Even though it was the same organic brand I have purchased at the store and it was not labeled “lite”, the milk was very thin (watery) so I had to add a natural thickener (guar gum) in order to use it for my beauty products.

Just keep that in mind if you do order online.

I've been playing it safe and buying it when I go grocery shopping. That way I can just take it back if there is a problem.

3. What kind of coconut milk?

Canned coconut milk is extremely convenient to use for your natural, organic beauty products. I always make sure it’s:

  • USDA certified organic coconut milk
  • Not “lite” or “light” coconut milk
  • The ingredient label lists at least “1g protein”
  • Not a lot of additives. Just coconut, water and maybe guar gum

4. What brand of coconut milk?

You can use any brand of organic coconut milk you want . . . but for now Native Forest and Thai Kitchen have been 2 organic brands that have worked well for me.

Once they have been refrigerated, the coconut milk usually becomes the perfect consistency for all of the beauty products I want to use it for.

5. What beauty products can you use coconut milk for?

It’s up to you! You can start using coconut milk for any beauty product you want. But here’s a list of all the beauty products I use it for:

6. Using coconut milk from a can

Always shake the can well before opening it.

Cleanliness is also very important when you are making and handling your own beauty products! You should always:

  • Wash your hands
  • Rinse and wipe off the lid of the can
  • Use clean, dry containers

7. What kind of containers?

I use PET plastic bottles. They come in convenient 2oz and 4oz sizes or larger.

PET bottles are nice because they can be recycled and the oils don’t break down the plastic and get into your freshly made beauty products.

I buy mine from US Container Corp. a local bottle company in my area, but you can find many bottle companies online.

8. How do you store coconut milk?

Once you open a can of organic coconut milk:

  • Keep it in the refrigerator!
  • Store it in an air tight, easy to use container

9. How long will it last?

Canned coconut milk will last about 4 days when it has been properly stored in the refrigerator. I have had mine last a little longer when I’ve added some organic essential oils to it.

I use coconut milk for a lot of my beauty products so I use it up pretty fast.

But, to give you an idea of when to throw it out . . . I have found that coconut milk will start to get a stronger nuttier smell and soon after, it does not smell good or fresh anymore.

So, whenever you’re in doubt . . . just throw it out!

Using coconut milk for your all natural, organic beauty products is a great alternative to any toxic synthetic or so called natural beauty products! I love it and hope these tips will help you get started!
