More Than Just A Non Dairy Milk Substitute!

My favorite is homemade fresh coconut milk.

Make It Fresh!

You can make it yourself with a little water . . . or coconut water
and:

Meat from the inside of a brown coconut

Or . . . if you want an easier way to make it to avoid all the steps of picking a good one out and cracking it open. . . you can use:

Organic shredded unsweetened coconut


Buy It

Don’t have time to make it? Don’t worry . . . put it on your grocery list.

You can usually find USDA certified organic brands in cans or cartons
at the grocery store or online. I would say . . . just read the label and make sure you’re happy with all the ingredients that are listed.


From a Carton

Coconut milk sold in a carton is made so you can use it just like you would use dairy milk.  It's ready to:

  • Pour into a glass and drink it
  • Add it to a bowl of cereal, etc.


Fresh or Canned

Fresh and canned coconut milk are not sweet and are great for making everything from baked goods to soups and chowders.

But, there are many ways to make them sweeter or thinner if you do want to enjoy them by the glass or on your cold cereal.  Below is a non dairy recipe and a few ideas you might like to try:


From a Can

When you use it from a can, you'll find it is usually thick and creamy. Especially once it has been refrigerated.

Two brands I have used are:

  • Native Forest
  • Thai Kitchen  

This recipe makes 8 oz.  If you need more just adjust the recipe with equal amounts of each ingredient.


Non Dairy Milk Recipe

Stir or blend together: 

  • 1/2 cup canned coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup plain coconut water

Chill it and it’s ready to drink by the glass, or use it on your cold breakfast cereal as a healthy replacement for soy or dairy milk.

If you don’t already have a favorite coconut water to use in this recipe, you might like these two organic brands:

Fresh

When you make it fresh, you may like it just the way it is.  But, there are an endless number of things you can add to make it sweeter or more to your personal taste:  Use your imagination.

  • Coconut Nectar (sap)
  • Coconut Sugar
  • Dates
  • Honey
  • Stevia
  • Vanilla, etc.

 

Cooking

If you're using it for cooking . . . you can use it straight from the can, carton, or make it fresh and add it into any recipe you would normally put dairy milk in:

  • Baked goods
  • Beverages
  • Desserts
  • Hot Cereals
  • Pancakes
  • Salad Dressings
  • Sauces
  • Scrambled Eggs
  • Smoothies
  • Soups & Chowders
